Health: The overall mental and physical state of a person; the absence of disease
Wellness: The state of being in optimal mental and physical health.
I believe with anything you partake in life, Health & Wellness plays a huge role.
Health & Wellness awareness has grown tremendously within the fashion world. For example, discussion have surfaced regarding model body types (in terms of desired clothing sizes), eating disorders, mental strain (in terms of competitive environments), and much more. These are all aspects that all creatives within the art realm face and encounter on a regular basis. The question here is how to overcome the negativity within the industry?
First: We embrace differences!
Today, body shaming has become a huge deal within the fashion
industry. Plus size models are thriving and companies have acknowledged that all humans are not shaped the same. Thus, a unique industry has carved its way to the top for plus-size and curvy women around the world. Even cultural differences have saturated the fashion world, like creating a segue for more modesty on the runway. For example, runways and the fashion world are embracing Muslim customs such as women wearing hijabs and men wearing turbans. Do not get me wrong, the
industry and world still have a long way to go in overcoming Islamic phobia. However, the fashion industry is slowly but surely changing its stereotype of the industry and improving it for the better.
Second: Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do.
I can only speak from my perspective as a North American, when I state this next excerpt:
Based on the above quote, I have noticed within my own country many individuals possess many talents. However, with those talents, I believe they are not heavily encouraged and supported because it’s set up for that one in a million-chance to succeed. Society has created almost impossible barriers for people to want to grow up and do something that that they are truly passionate about. From my own personal experience, I see many people taking up careers that they know are in demand and they can make a good living from, but not necessarily 100% fully invested in it. Since there is job security and money involved, it is more practical to take that route versus going the one in a million-chance route. We must embrace all passions and open doorways where those jobs are just as demanding and are in dire need and less impossible to obtain and maintain.
Third: Make your health and well-being look good!
I first took control of my health when I decided to become vegetarian. In addition, I spend 1-2 months of the year where I practice veganism. I also partake in intermediate fasting where I fast from sunrise to sundown and workout six days a week via CrossFit and water aerobics. As a result, I drastically changed my health & wellness for the better where I lost 37
pounds and became in the best shape I have ever been in my life. From this major transformation, it made me feel even more comfortable in my skin and even allowed me to become even more versatile within the industry.
My health & wellness journey matched with my styling abilities transferred over into my workout gear. Now, I need to increase my workout gear, but I love to workout in my Human Races. I love the brand and message of Human Races. I always wear Under-Armour or Nike when I work out. Those are my two favorite garment clothing lines. Lastly, I always wear a baseball cap preferably from the CDJApparel clothing line!
